The Call

Advanced Seminar in Migration:

European Border Regime in the Periphery of the EU

Rijeka, Croatia :: 15th – 17th December 2021

The advanced seminar in migration “European Border Regime in the Periphery of the EU” explores the analytical potential of critical migration and border regime studies in the context of the EU periphery or more precisely in the context of research of/along the so-called Balkan route. The seminar will consider current research and the struggles resulting from the pandemic context. It will explore and reflect on the highly dynamic and conflictual developments and their historical entanglements, the ambiguities of humanitarian interventions and strategies of containment, migrational tactics to survive, local struggles, artistic interventions, regional and transnational activism and recent initiatives to curb the extensive practices of border violence and pushbacks.

This advanced seminar is a joint project organized by the Institute of Ethnology and Folklore Research (Croatia) and the University of Rijeka, Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, Department of Cultural Studies (Croatia), in collaboration with the Research Centre of the Slovenian Academy of Sciences and Arts (Slovenia) and University of Rijeka Center for Advanced Studies – South Eastern Europe, University of Rijeka (Croatia).

Applications are welcome from M.A. and Ph.D. students studying or interested in this research area. Applicants should submit a C.V. and in a few sentences outline (in the main body of their emails) their principle interests in these areas, as well as their academic and/or activist engagements and experiences.

Please send your application until 10th November 2021 to: schoolmigration@ief.hr. Applicants will be informed by 13th November 2021. Organizers will provide accommodation in Rijeka from 15th to 17th December 2021 for all participants.
